House Ways and Means Committee

Members

Committees are where most of the legislature's detailed work happens. After a bill is introduced, it is assigned to a committee, which holds hearings, takes testimony, and decides whether to send it back to the full chamber for a vote. The chair controls which bills are heard — so a bill can stall here without ever receiving a vote.

Chair: The head of a committee, typically a member of the majority party. They control the committee's agenda, schedule hearings, and preside over meetings.
Vice Chair: A member who assists the chair and presides in their absence. Some committees may have a Vice Chair for both the majority and minority parties.
Ranking Member: The highest-ranking member of the minority party on a committee.
